GOPA’s Latest Research: Unveiling the Secrets of the Lammergeier

The Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture, is a magnificent bird of prey that plays a vital role in the Pyrenean ecosystem. As a scavenger, it helps to prevent the spread of disease by consuming carcasses. However, the Lammergeier population has faced significant challenges in recent decades. Habitat loss, poisoning, and collisions with power lines have all contributed to its decline.

GOPA has been conducting research on the Lammergeier for over 20 years. Our latest project focuses on understanding the breeding behavior and foraging habits of these birds. We use GPS tracking to monitor their movements and identify key feeding areas. We also collect data on their diet and breeding success. This information is essential for developing effective conservation strategies.

Our research has revealed that the Lammergeier population in the Pyrenees is slowly recovering. Thanks to conservation efforts, the number of breeding pairs has increased in recent years. However, the species still faces significant threats. We continue to work with local communities and government agencies to protect the Lammergeier and its habitat. We believe that with continued effort, we can ensure the long-term survival of this iconic bird.
